Public history with care
This site is a growing public-history resource. These standards explain how MCHS distinguishes evidence from interpretation, protects people and collections, and improves access.
Local history is strongest when a claim can be traced, compared, and corrected.
We prefer original records, institutional catalogs, official surveys and nominations, peer-reviewed scholarship, and documented oral histories. Tourism pages and community references can identify leads but do not replace the underlying evidence.
Staff-managed records identify a source and review state. Estimates, approximate map points, interpretive composites, family traditions, and unresolved identifications should be labeled rather than presented as settled fact.
Coal and rail history includes workers, families, labor, migration, race, gender, health, environment, community life, and change—not only companies, technology, prominent owners, or nostalgic stories.
Send the page address, the exact statement or image, your proposed correction, and the source that supports it to info@mercercountyhistoricalsociety.net. Staff should preserve the evidence, review material changes, and update or remove content when warranted. For privacy, safety, cultural sensitivity, or rights concerns, use the same address and explain the urgency.
Rights can differ by object, photograph, recording, collection, donor agreement, and holding institution. A link, scan, catalog record, or physical copy does not by itself establish copyright ownership or reproduction permission.
When reuse is permitted, retain the creator, title or description, date, collection and item identifier, institution, required credit line, license, and stable source link. MCHS does not claim ownership of third-party collections merely because this site links to them.
Public website files can be saved by any browser, so MCHS does not use invasive fingerprinting or claim that code can identify who copied a page. Report a site that impersonates MCHS, changes payment instructions, or requests MCHS credentials to the Society privately with the URL and observation time. Do not sign in to or attempt to disrupt the suspected site.
Tour and event requests, volunteer applications, shift signups, and unpublished visitor notes are staff-only. Public records require explicit publication controls; visitor-logbook notes remain private until reviewed.
Do not publish personal contact details, sensitive family information, or potentially harmful claims about living people without a clear lawful and ethical basis.
Cemetery, burial, sacred, traumatic, and culturally sensitive material requires context, dignity, and consultation. The ability to photograph or digitize something does not mean it should be public.
MCHS aims to support keyboard navigation, screen readers, text alternatives, readable contrast, zoom, reduced motion, and responsive layouts. If a page, map, document, image, or form creates a barrier, email the Society with the page and assistance needed.
Use the globe-shaped Translate control in the shared navigation to open the current public page in Google Translate. Machine translation may be imperfect. Spanish-language questions and requests are welcome; staff should confirm important details in writing.
Map coordinates support trip planning and may be approximate. They do not define legal property lines, National Register boundaries, safe access, or permission to enter. Confirm conditions and view private property only from lawful public locations.
The local Museum Agent searches a generated index of every public page, published public-record APIs, and a reviewed institutional source layer. It ranks and quotes evidence in the browser, links every answer to sources, and fails closed when the record is insufficient. Ranking and extracted summaries are discovery aids, not proof.
Azure AI synthesis is optional and available only when configured and selected. It receives the question and matched public excerpts—not private records—and must answer only from them, cite claims, identify conflicts, and state uncertainty. Always open the cited source; contact the research desk when evidence is incomplete.
